Aibel wins breakthrough pilot contract for new technologies

Aibel has been awarded a contract by Teekay Petrojarl Production (TPP) for pilot installations of its latest two new technologies, the High Temperature Vessel Internal Electrostatic Coalescer (HT VIEC) and the Inductive Level Measurement System (ILMS). As Aibel’s president and CEO, R. Rasmus Sunde, comments: “While both technologies are further developments of existing products, the contract marks an important breakthrough for their commercialization and endorses yet again our expertise in the area of oil and water separation.”

The products will be installed on TPP’s FPSO, Petrojarl Cidade de Rio das Ostras, an FPSO which will be operating on Petrobras’ Siri reservoir on the Badejo field in the Campos Basin off the southeastern coast of Brazil.

Withstands higher temperatures

HT VIEC is a new version of the existing epoxy VIEC, which has been developed to cater to fields that operate both at high temperatures and experience separation problems. While the existing VIEC could withstand temperatures of up to 80 oC the HT VIEC this limit is now raised to 150 oC.

More robust and precise

The ILMS is a water-profiling system designed to measure and monitor the separation process from within the separators. While Aibel’s first ILMS, which was installed at Troll Pilot in 1999 and is still working, measured the oil-water interface level, the new ILMS will monitor the oil-in-water concentration in the water phase of the separators, thereby providing information on the separation efficiency and the response to changes in liquid levels, emulsion breaker and the electrostatic coalescer equipment. The new ILMS therefore combines the robustness of the previous version with the ability to give precise profile measurements of the separation process.

Siri reservoir

The Siri reservoir contains a very heavy oil of 13 API and the operating temperature is set to be 140 oC, making Aibel’s new HT VIEC technology the ultimate solution to avoid or solve any expected separation problems. The ILMS will give the operator much better process control through its ability to monitor the separation process and to measure separation efficiency.
