    Aibel undertakes quality work at its own facilities

K-Lab SST

Aibel has built a new Kårstø testing facility for Statoil which is designed to test subsea compressors.

Aibel won the contract for the engineering, procurement and construction of the test facility in the summer of 2011. The project has been named K-LAB SST (Sub-Sea Test Project). The test facility was handed over to Statoil in the summer of 2013. It is attached to the Kårstø metering and technology laboratory, the K-lab.

Aibel has put in 300,000 hours’ work on the project. A total of about 150 Aibel employees have been involved in the work on the test facility. 

The pressure in a reservoir decreases as gas is taken out. Powerful compressors are required to send the gas on to the processing. Usually compressors are placed on the platforms, but now Statoil will try placing them on the seabed in the Åsgard field.

Before that happens, the compressors will be carefully tested at the new facility at Kårstø. It consists of a big test pool and a complete new test facility. The electro-compressor will be placed in the pool for necessary cooling. Parts of the facility simulates that the compressor is below sea level.

Kårstø processing plant

The Kårstø processing plant north of Stavanger plays a key role in the transport and treatment of gas and condensate (light oil) from important areas on the Norwegian continental shelf.

First gas arrived at the plant on 25 June 1985, and dry gas began to be dispatched by pipeline to Emden in Germany on 15 October of the same year.  The Statpipe trunkline system carries gas from the North Sea to Kårstø.

The Kårstø facility also receives gas from Åsgard and other fields in the Norwegian Sea through the Åsgard Transport trunkline.
